Taste Inn Wales

Welcome to Taste Inn Wales

We hope this will be a place for like-minded folk who live, love to visit, or like Wales.

Our intention is for Taste Inn Wales to evolve into a community-based website for anyone interested in what’s going on, in and around the Brecon Beacons, who share an interest in food, wine, well being and general nice stuff!

We would love to hear from you, with any comments, views, suggestions, features or photographs you would like to see on this website, and you can send these to: reply@tasteinnwales.com

My tastebuds have a nose for identifying 'happiness on a plate' - its a bit like 'happy chickens lay good eggs' - you can just tell if a dish comes from happy chefs as soon as it arrives in front of you. Can anyone else or is it just me? I can tell if food I'm served has come from a harmonious, quality kitchen or one which is over-stressed or filled with unhappy staff. Its a handy signpost for anybody who likes to eat out. To me this is more important than entering the realm of the Michelin star.

We've been smiling all week and there's a new, healthy spring in our steps following last weeks' visit by HRH Prince Charles to The Castle. He delivered a strong, simple, encouraging message to all of us in Llandovery and what he had to say, makes a lot of sense for rural communities like ours.

Last Friday 2nd March we were extremely honoured to welcome HRH the Prince of Wales to the Castle hotel in Llandovery. Before entering the hotel the Prince took a long look at our specials board and commented that our prices looked ‘extremely good value’ which raised a few smiles and relaxed everybody.

A very happy St David’s Day from all the team here. We are celebrating our Welsh roots proudly and loudly this week with some very special Welsh menus. We all know that Saint David's Day is the feast day of St David, the patron saint of Wales. But did you know that it used to be a national holiday? The first day of March was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David as he died on that day in 589. The date was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century and for centuries was a bank holiday for all. Sadly this tradition stopped in the 20th century.

The sun is coming out, the temperature is rising and we feel that Spring is on the horizon. People are starting to venture out again and we think its worth extolling the virtues of Llandovery as its a veritable hub of activity, increasingly attracting visitors due to its unique location right at the heart of the mountains, rivers and forests of South West Wales. The longer we spend here at The Castle, the more we keep uncovering, the more impressed we become.

This week's menu at The Castle is featuring oak roasted salmon, courtesy of our friends from the Black Mountain Smokery, Crickhowell. Smoked fish is a truly healthy option - full of good oils including Omega3, high in protein and minerals and very low in fat. Even better, it tastes amazing.

Our very own natural larder in the backyard, check out these beauties. Oyster mushrooms, now in season - from the beech trees in the gardens to the plate in our restaurants.

Taste Inn Wales are putting a 'team' together to compete in this years' Dragon Ride - the annual cycle in our backyard across South Wales and the Brecon Beacons. It'll be a family affair, with Taste Inn Wales co-owners Sean Gerrard and Jessica Bridgeman taking part. This fantastic charity ride where riders choose and ride various distances - 206km; 125km or 37km - up Wales' biggest mountain roads, is supported by Olympic champ and fellow Welshman Geraint Thomas.

We had an email this morning from Photographer Julian Fulton, a photographer that has done numerous weddings at both The Manor Hotel and Peterstone Court. The last time we saw him was in Mid-January when he kindly offered his services for our Taste Inn Wales staff party... HERE'S WHAT WE HAD BACK....

We bought some outstanding short horn beef from Marcus and Daniella Lampard’s Mandinam Farm recently – we then cured it ourselves and this week have made some salt beef. We think its so good, that it deserves to be more than just a filling in a gourmet sandwich. So we are making a heart warming cawl topped with the delicious beef this week. Come over and try it, I guarantee it’ll warm your soul.
